How to Choose the Right Outdoor Solar Lights

Learn about different types of outdoor solar lights, where to use them and why you might want to avoid the bargain bin

Using solar lighting outdoors can be a lifesaver when outdoor outlets are not available. But do solar-powered lights really work? How do they measure up to hardwired electric lights? And what if your yard is shady or you live somewhere that rarely sees the sun? Here’s the full scoop on choosing and using solar-powered lights in your yard.

How solar lighting works.
Photovoltaic cells absorb sunlight during the day to charge the batteries, which then light the bulb at night. Because solar lights are powered by the sun, they must be placed in an area that receives full sun — ideally eight or more hours per day.

What if you don’t have direct sun?

If you are putting solar lights in your desert yard in Tucscon or Palm Springs, they are sure to operate at maximum strength — but what if you live in Seattle or simply have a heavily shaded yard? It’s not quite as simple, but you can still have solar-powered lights, even in a fully shaded area. A solar or landscape lighting pro can help position a remote photovoltaic panel on your roof or in a sunnier area of your yard, which can then be wired to the lights in the shady area.

If there simply isn’t much sunlight to be gathered, even on the roof (for example, you live somewhere like Seattle or Portland), the solar lights will still work, but they won’t shine as brightly or for as long each evening.

Types of Solar Lights
Solar path lights.
These are small solar lights on stakes, which can be pushed into the ground alongside a walkway to softly illuminate the path at night. They are not as bright as electric path lights, so plan to use more (up to twice as many) to light your path with roughly the same glow as electric.

Where to use solar path lights.Solar path lights are ideal for illuminating walkways far from exterior outlets, and can provide an enchanting glow along winding garden paths.

Ambient and decorative solar lights. Decorative solar lights, including colorful blown glass, decorative lanterns and string lights, are not as bright as solar path lights. However, used in multiples or alongside path lights and spotlights, they can provide a warm ambient glow.

Where to use ambient solar lights. Place a few handblown glass solar lights on stakes in your garden beds for soft landscape lighting. Or hang solar string lights, like the charming mason jar lights shown here, over an outdoor dining table for a welcoming touch at your next gathering.

Solar-powered spotlights. The brightest solar lights available are called task lights or spotlights, and the best ones can provide light that’s roughly equivalent to a 40-watt incandescent bulb. That is still not as bright as a typical outdoor spotlight, so you may want to double or triple up in areas where you want bright, direct light.

Where to use solar spotlights. Motion-sensing solar spotlights can be used near doors and in the driveway. Spotlights can also be placed in the garden, with the beam of light directed at a tree or another landscape feature.

Pay attention to the hue. Since most solar-powered lights today use LED bulbs, the light they emit is bright white. If you want the look of incandescent bulbs, look for solar lights with tinted covers — they may be labeled “amber” or “soft white.”

You get what you pay for. The brightness of a solar light depends on the brightness of the sun and the amount of daylight it is exposed to — but it also depends on the quality of the photovoltaic cells and the size of the LED bulb. Higher-quality photovoltaic cells and larger LED bulbs tend to cost more, so to a certain extent, the higher-priced solar lights do tend to shine more brightly.

Light Your House With Beautiful Eye-Catching LED Christmas Lights

It’s that time of year! I love decorating for Christmas. After multiple moves, I haven’t yet found all of our decorations, though. I was so excited for the opportunity to review LED Christmas lights and get the decorating started!
LED Christmas Lights

These beautiful LED Christmas Lights are wonderfully bright and offer a variety of colors. You can choose to stay on one color or alternate colors. With the convenient remote, it’s easy to change the settings. I, personally, like to change it up so they look a little different every day! There are so many options!
LED Christmas Lights Remote

Settings on the remote include color options, jump and fade changes, and brightness adjustment. What really makes it unique, though, is the lights respond to music. These settings are on the bottom of the remote, and there are four options. If music isn’t sensed but the 1st (general music) or 2nd (tenderness music) settings are chosen the lights will work in a pattern, they will be off on the 3rd (DJ music) setting and stay on the current colors in the 4th (active music) setting. Such a unique feature, right?

The LED Christmas lights are bright and very eye-catching. Plus, they were easy to put up! They are on an LED strip that has adhesive on the back. We simply had to make sure the area above the porch was clean and stick it on! Unfortunately, one one side of the porch they didn’t want to stay. I’m not sure if it’s because it wasn’t clean enough, but we used some clear packing tape over them in a couple of spots. Because they are flat and bright, you can’t even tell!
LED Christmas Lights Porch

What I find interesting as well is you can actually cut the lights as needed to every 3 LEDs. No worries about bulbs going out and having to find the bulb that’s out so the rest of the lights will work! This is just an easy, convenient alternative to traditional Christmas lights – and they look amazing, too!
These LED Christmas lights can be purchased on Amazon.

Elivebuy Quick Charge 2.0 10,400 mAh Power Bank For $19.99 on Black Friday

Quick Charge 2.0 is a god send in this day and age where people are constantly tethered to their mobile devices. Most devices these days seem to carry the Quick Charge moniker and each device offers a fairly substantial amount of juice for a relatively short charge time. Of course, that depends on each device.

With a number of devices boasting their fast charge times thanks to Quick Charge 2.0, it would make sense for us to see power banks and accessories that take advantage of it. The Quick Charge 2.0 Power Bank from Elivebuy is no different. On paper it offers Quick Charge 2.0 and 10,400 mAh worth of juice in a small package, but do those figures make it worth buying? Let’s find out.
WHAT YOU GET IN THE BOX
  • Portable power bank in black
  • 6-inch micro-usb charge cable
  • Neoprene carrying case
  • User manual
  • 12-month hassle-free replacement warranty
The packaging gets out of the way and let's the charger speak for itself.
USING THE CHARGER
The power bank doesn't add a lot of extra fluff and that's OK.
CONCLUSION

Like I’ve said before, I have a number of power banks and most of them go unused. The last power bank I used, the Gooloo Jumpstart Power Bank became a staple in my travel bag, and I’m never out the door without it. Suffice to say, it set the bar pretty high in terms of power banks and their usage.
When I opened the package there wasn’t a lot in it. Just the power bank, a charger, a user manual and a carrying case. While I don’t expect much more than that when it comes to power banks, I wasn’t inundated with unnecessary fluff. The charger itself is the same way. One power button, four lights signifying the level of charge, a micro-USB input and a full USB output port.
Unlike the Gooloo Power Bank, I was able to use the Elivebuy power bank right out of the box, and the device came with pretty close to a full charge. It’s a much appreciated touch for those who order the power bank and are then able to just throw it in their bags without having to pre-charge the device.
Like before, I took this on an extended camping trip where I was away from a power source for three days. The power bank’s large 10,400 mAh should easily charge my LG G4’s 3,000 mAh battery three-times over with juice to spare and it easily did. The Samsung premium 18,650 cells perform nicely.
Normally when I use my phone in those situations I’m meticulous about my use, stretching the battery out as far as it can go and prolonging the need to charge the device. Not this time. I found that I could use my device as I normally would without worry that the power bank would run out of juice.
Using the power bank is simple. Attach your device with the USB cable, hit the big circle power button and away you go. It’s pretty cut-and-dry and I didn’t need to look at the manual at all. The power bank is said to charge your devices up to 75 percent faster and from my uses I can believe it. I popped my G4 onto the charger at 15 percent and in roughly an hour it was sitting at 85 percent, a lot faster than the OEM charger and cable that came with the phone. It took roughly 75 minutes to charge my phone from 15 percent to full and 90 minutes from zero to full. Not too shabby if you ask me.
While the device itself is a bit on the heavier side, you won’t notice the bulk in your bag but if you try to put it in your pocket, you’re definitely going to notice it. It’s compact enough with a nice, metal-esque finish. It also comes with a 4-dot light that shows you just how much juice you have left.
It’s compliant with most 2014 and later Quick Charge 2.0 devices, but if you don’t have such a device it will charge other devices universally at a speed up to five volts at 2.1 amps. I wasn’t worried about over-charging my devices either. The power bank comes with multiple safeguards that are built-in to protect against over-current, overcharging and overheating.
The biggest complaint —if you want to call it that — is a lack of a second USB output port. Hooking up your phone and a Bluetooth speaker for instance won’t happen as there is only one USB port, so you’re only going to be able to charge one device at a time. With the hefty 10,400 mAh it comes with, having a second output would make this the perfect power bank to have in group situations.
Other than that though, there’s really not much to complain about with power bank or even say about it for that matter.
While it hasn’t replaced my Gooloo charger in my bag, it has certainly joined the other power bank (you can never have too much power in reserve can you). When I’m at home I’ve found myself reaching for the Elivebuy bank instead of the OEM charger like I used to. Being able to bring that and my phone with me to other rooms of the house, instead of leaving my phone tethered to my nightstand is convenient.
I would highly recommend this power bank. It’s compact, nice looking and comes with a lot of power in its small frame. Depending on your device, you’ll be able to quickly charge it three-four times without problem. With a sub-$30 price point, you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck. It’s the perfect companion to your smartphone if you’re on the road and away from an outlet for long periods of time.
As of writing, the power bank costs $26.99 on Amazon so you’re getting one heck of a bargain for a fast-charging, high capacity portable power device.
But now,  the power bank only cost $19.99 on Amazon.
